Prop Market Research: Open Interest and Volume Need Different Units
Open interest and volume can be displayed near each other while describing different measurements. Before using them in research for an evaluation, identify the unit, contract multiplier and observation period. A large number without those fields is hard to compare.

Identify the measurement before calculating
Open-interest observations describe outstanding positions according to the source’s methodology; volume describes activity over a period. Save the source definitions and count convention. A contract count should not be silently compared with a coin quantity or cash notional.
A Singapore diary display can help locate the observation, but it does not change the source window. Record the full original instant and exact interval. Use this site’s existing units resource to preserve those distinctions.
Convert an explicitly fictional contract count
Suppose a teaching dataset reports 1,200 outstanding contracts at an instant and specifies 0.01 base units per contract. The corresponding base quantity is 12. A separate report gives 8 base units of volume over the previous hour.
The 12 and 8 now share a base unit but not a measurement type or period. Their ratio, two-thirds, is merely a ratio of these supplied figures. It is not the fraction of positions closed, a count of independent traders or a probability of the next price move.
| Record | Supplied value | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Open interest | 1,200 contracts | Instant observation |
| Contract multiplier | 0.01 base units | Teaching specification |
| Converted open interest | 12 base units | Same instant |
| Trading volume | 8 base units | Previous-hour activity, different measure |
Keep research inputs outside the account ledger
Neither statistic supplies a confirmed account fill, fee or floating valuation. HashHedge’s instrument limits and evaluation rules require their own checks for the actual chosen product. A research indicator cannot establish permission or remaining account capacity.
The sponsored HashHedge link offers current programme information after the method. This page does not supply live market data, a signal or an evaluation forecast. All numeric observations and the contract multiplier are fictional inputs rather than actual venue specifications.
